Built in Berlin. Built for the world.
The story of why ZelFinance exists.
ZelFinance was founded in 2021 in Berlin, by a small team of former banking engineers who had spent a decade building payment infrastructure for some of Europe's largest financial institutions — and had grown quietly frustrated by how little of that progress ever reached the people actually sending money across borders.
The founding moment came during a conversation in a Kreuzberg co-working space. One of the founders, a payments engineer originally from Hamburg, had just spent forty minutes on the phone with his bank trying to understand why a transfer to a colleague in Lisbon would take three business days and cost more in fees than the flight itself would have. His co-founder, an infrastructure architect who'd spent years building settlement systems for a German investment bank, had a simple observation: the technology to move money instantly across borders had existed for years. What was missing wasn't capability — it was the will to build a product that put the user first.
"We weren't trying to disrupt banking. We were trying to build the bank we wished we could use ourselves."
That question became the founding brief for ZelFinance: what would a digital bank look like if it were built by people who understood the plumbing of the financial system, but designed it as if the customer's time and money actually mattered?
From Berlin to the World
The first version of ZelFinance launched quietly in late 2021, serving a small group of freelancers and remote workers across Germany who needed to hold and move money in multiple currencies without losing a meaningful percentage to conversion spreads and wire fees. Word spread through European tech and freelancer communities faster than the founding team expected.
Today, ZelFinance is headquartered in Berlin, with operational teams supporting customers across Europe, Africa, and Asia. We are regulated under German and EU financial services frameworks, and we hold customer funds in segregated accounts — separate from our own operating capital.
What Hasn't Changed
The founding principle from that conversation in Kreuzberg still governs every product decision we make: if a feature doesn't make the customer's financial life measurably simpler, faster, or more transparent, it doesn't ship. We'd rather build fewer things well than many things adequately.
